Where are we with Blended Learning?

Students are working in groups and stations in both math and reading
The third grade teachers have created check of sheets for the students to use while they travel through stations (See Picture)
Teachers are using Google Classroom as their classroom LMS
Students are able to move from one group to another quickly and efficiently
Teachers have implemented IXL Math and Reading as an online program to collect data while the students are practicing their skills in both subject areas.

IXL in the ELA Blended Learning Classroom

Over the years, I have used and implemented a lot of great online data collecting software programs in to traditional and blended learning classrooms. Today, I wanted to showcase one of my long time favorites, IXL.

Background Information: Six years ago, when I was a fifth grade teacher in Worthington City Schools, I loved using the program Quia as a way for me to gather quick formative assessment data on my student's progress. I loved the learning games, collaboration tools, and the data that would be collected as the students were learning online. Since then, Quiz has branched off to an online skill based program called. IXL is an easy to use tool for teachers to implement into the classroom as way for students to practice skills. I have always recommendedIXL Math to teachers and school districts but just recently, I have been pushing more IXL ELA into the blended learning classrooms.

Below is an example of an inner city school district using IXL as part of their blended learning program. The teachers are using the program as a way to increase student understanding of objectives in ELA and Math. The teachers have multiple stations that the students must travel through during a two day rotation. This station is a skill driven station that focuses on identifying the nouns. As you watch the video, pay attention to what the student is doing with her left hand. After the video we will discuss why she is counting during a ELA skill based lesson.

What is Mircro Learning?

This week I came across an article published by Grovo on Micro-learning. Below are the key concepts on Micro-learning

"We are moving from a culture of deep attention to hyper attention"

The retention of material taught in long courses is not effective and is often forgotten within one year.

However, by creating Micro-learning modules,

we are able to retain the information
work at our own pace
and interact with the material in holistic approach.

As a Blended Learning Coach, I get asked the question, What does Blended Learning look like in the classroom? My response is a Reese Peanut Butter Cup. Mainly because I love peanut butter and chocolate. No but really, the Blended Learning Classroom is like a Reese Peanut Butter Cup, let me explain.

Direct instruction from the teacher is like the Chocolate.
