What does the "Station Rotation Blended Learning" look like in an inner city third grade math and language arts classroom?

For the last four months, I, Marcia Kish, have been working with a team a teachers from Leawood Elementary School in Columbus City School district on how to implement the station rotation blended learning model. The two teachers, Kuhn and Williamson have spent a lot of time reconstructing their traditional classroom into a blended learning environment. Because of their effort and willingness to be innovative, the student engagement has been off the charts since they have started to use the blended learning method. (Student academic growth has also been measured throughout the process, we are just waiting to get back data from the NWEA test to see how much growth the students have made over the last four months)

What's Next?

The station rotation blended learning model is still in the works at Leawood Elementary School. The teachers and I are working to move towards more small group teacher lead stations, allowing the students to move at their own Pace, Place, and Path. However, both teachers are using the data collected from the Google Forms, Achieve, and NWEA test to drive the Differentiated Instruction small group rotations. With this only being the fourth month since transitioning over to rotations, the teachers and students have made tremendous progress towards becoming a "Station Rotation Blended Learning Model" classroom.

I am very impressed with the student's ability to work independently is amazing and a lot of work must have gone into setting it up! I am trying to implement a blended learning model in my classroom and I think the station rotation model will work the best in my environment. I teach third grade and have some technology in the classroom but I am not sure how to stretch it to create enough stations for students. I have 1 iPad mini, 1 promethean board, and 2 student desktop computers. We have mobile lab that I can use from time to time with laptops for all, but it not available to me every day. Any suggestions as to how to make this tech work for stations?

This blog was very helpful as I plan my blended learning classroom for next year. I teach first grade and am looking to implement a station rotation model. It was nice to see the videos of it in action as well as all the coaching resources you provide. They really support a teacher as they embark as this journey for student learning!

My school is transitioning into the blended learning model so I have been researching the different models to see which one would work best in my environment. This blog and video showing the station rotation model was very helpful and seems to be an efficient and effective way to set up a blended learning classroom. I really liked the pre assessment being done on Google Forms, and the fact that each activity addressed the student's individual needs, whether they were struggling with the concepts or needing to be challenged. All students were actively engaged in learning.

I really liked seeing the videos for a real world example of blended learning taking place with the station rotation model. I have used station rotations in my second and third grade classroom. It worked really well and it helped that we had more than enough technology in the classroom. I am at a new school this year and we do not have very much technology; one student computer, one iPad mini, and a promethean board. I am hoping to use the promethean board as a station and I liked seeing an example of that on the video. My question would be how to make sure that the technology being used incorporates student interaction with each another. I will be teaching second grade again this year and I don't feel that the interactive technology programs where they can comment on each others work and such would be beneficial because they are still learning how to use the technology and they don't necessarily know how to comment properly. It can be taught of course, but I just feel like they are still a little young for that. Working together on the computer to solve problems could maybe work, but I have heard that there is software out there that has stuff for the students to do collaboratively. I have used google classroom but from my understanding, that is not actually blended learning unless the students are able to communicate with one another online. I noticed reference to the use of google forms on the video and am planning on looking further into that to see if that is a better form of blended learning that I could incorporate into my classroom.

I'm participating in an online class that is an introduction to Blended Learning. This video gave me a visual of what it can look like. My hope is to find a video that shows teachers setting up the classroom expectations for the process.
