My first thought is to tell the teachers, that most of my career has been either teaching in a blended learning classroom, creating a blended learning high school, or providing professional development on blended learning. I have had a lot of hands on experience from building the learning environment from ground up. I have made a lot of mistakes but with each mistake comes a new learning opportunity.
My second thought is to tell them about all of the other great blended learning teachers from around the country that I have learned from over the years. My favorite go to resource for high school blended learning is Catlin Tucker. I ran across Catlin's blog a couple of years ago and instantly start to follow her on Twitter and YouTube. The reason why I started to follow her was because she was actually in the classroom still teaching and putting into practice the technology tools that are so common with blended learning.
Early this school year, I ran across the blog post where Catlin talked about using Word Sneak. Word Sneak is a Jimmy Fallon concept that he uses with guest during the Tonight Show. I instantly thought of 20 ways to use that concept in every classroom curriculum from Math, to ELA, to Science, to Social Studies. I even thought of ways to use it in the art classroom. But most importantly, I thought that Word Sneak would be a great fit for the blended learning environment.
So many times, teachers focus in on the technology and leave out ways for student to interact with each other. During my blended learning trainings, I really push the fact that their still needs to be Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking in the classroom. Word Sneak is just one way to make sure that the students are interacting with other students to learn new concepts.
